Am I the Only One Doing it All Wrong?

Presentation1

Self irritation today: being unable to avoid clicking on these types of social media articles. There is a plethora of things we are doing wrong:

  • Eating the wrong foods
  • Drinking coffee at the wrong time of the day
  • Did you know there is a wrong way to eat cupcakes?
  • Boiling eggs
  • Wearing bobby pins
  • Dispensing Tic-Tacs
  • Opening a banana – really?
  • Straining spaghetti
  • Recently Gwyneth Paltrow demonstrated the correct way to yawn.

I’m about ready to Google the proper way to blink my eyes, because surely I must be doing that wrong as well…

All my life, I have been told I’ve been doing something wrong. I am sure that I am NOT the only one doing it all wrong.  But who is to say that how we do something is right or wrong?  It might just be different. Perhaps I am more comfortable doing things a certain way.

I remember going to visit my brother in Seattle a few years back. Mind you, we were already well into our adulthood. While taking a ferry ride, we snacked on some yummy ice cream.  My brother handed me a napkin, annoyed and said “Wipe your face, you got ice cream all over it”.  I just giggled and wiped my face.  The way I’ve always approached ice cream is: If I don’t get it all over my face, well then – I am doing it wrong. But that’s just me being me.

Another time, after giving a friend an assignment to do a gratitude list she had a most interesting story to share.  She had shown another friend her gratitude list and her friend replied “You’re doing it all wrong”.  Wait. There’s a wrong way to do a gratitude list?  I guess I should toss all mine out then because most likely, they were all erroneously  written…

I want to be okay with who I am and how I do things. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about continuous improvement. But I also know the obsession with doing things perfectly, the way others are doing it. This can take over your whole day, week, life…

Being True to Yourself

There is much written about being true to oneself. Though we are all created equally, we are also designed to be our true authentic selves.

“Now am I trying to win the favor of men, or of God? Do I seek to please men? If I were still seeking popularity with men, I should not be a bond servant of Christ (the Messiah)” – Galatians 1:10

Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power. – Lao Tzu

You cannot believe in God until you believe in yourself. –Swami Vivekananda

Today, celebrate you in all your perfect imperfection! Wear your shirt inside out, two different shoes, take a long-cut instead of the usual short-cut. And for goodness sake, STOP clicking on those links that which only exist to get you to spend more money.  Yes, they are trying to sell you a product that in the end, will not make you nearly as happy as being true to yourself.
